Labour MP for Brent East Dawn Butler has introduced the Nurse (Use of Title) Bill in Parliament, aimed to legally protect the title ‘nurse’.
This proposed legislation would ensure that only individuals registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) are permitted to use the title in health and social care settings, with the primary goal of enhancing patient safety and upholding the integrity of the nursing profession.
In support of this initiative, The British Association of Medical Aesthetic Nurses (BAMAN) has reached out to the Aesthetics Journal to express its endorsement. “Only an Act of Parliament can put an end to the shocking state of affairs in Britain today, that allows anyone in a uniform to pretend they are a nurse. BAMAN wholeheartedly endorses the legislation initiative lead by the honourable Dawn Butler. Her effort is a crucial step towards highlighting the importance of the word ‘nurse’, not only because legislation must protect legitimate nurses, but BAMAN recognises that only this bill will invigorate the integrity of nursing status and trust.”
The Nurse (Use of Title) Bill is scheduled for its second reading in the House of Commons on March 28. Aesthetics will report as and when Parliament updates are announced.
