The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) has introduced its Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery Section, the first new specialty division in 35 years.

The inaugural event, held on November 28 at RSM’s London headquarters, focused on the psychological aspects of aesthetic practice. The session was inaugurated by president of the RSM Professor Gillian Leng, alongside the section’s leadership team which included consultant dermatologist Dr Christopher Rowland Payne, plastic surgeon Mr Jonathan Britto and aesthetic practitioner and vice president Dr Souphi Samizadeh.

Presentations from Professor Anthony Bewley, Dr William Shanahan and Dr Rowland Payne explored topics including body dysmorphic disorder and the role of psychiatry in medical aesthetics. The event was said to have been well-received for its thoughtful discussions on the intersection of psychology and patient care, according to attendees.

The Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery Section aims to foster collaboration across disciplines and promote evidence-based practices within the field. The next event will take place on February 27.

Dr Samizadeh added, “The establishment of the Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery Section marks a pivotal moment for our field. By embracing multidisciplinary collaboration and prioritising evidence-based practices, we aim to redefine standards, integrate psychological insights and advance patient safety – ensuring medical aesthetics evolves with integrity and scientific rigour.”
