A physiotherapist in Dublin has been found guilty of professional misconduct for administering unlicensed botulinum toxin.

Physiotherapist Igor Castro appeared before a fitness-to-practise inquiry over his use of the product Liztox, a Korean botulinum toxin product which is used for aesthetic treatments. A fitness-to-practise committee found Mr Castro guilty of administering Liztox to three patients at his practice in October 2023.

Additionally, the committee also confirmed that Mr Castro promoted the product and its administration on Instagram between October and November 2023.

The inquiry’s chairwoman, Geraldine Feeney, explained the committee made its findings on the basis of Mr Castro’s own admissions and the “uncontroverted” evidence of a number of witnesses, including Ciaran Wright, an enforcement officer with the Health Products Regulatory Authority. She stated the physiotherapist’s patients had been misled and put at risk, commenting, “These findings are very serious and go to the issue of public safety.”
