A cross-sectional study examined links between dating app use, self-presentation styles and cosmetic surgery acceptance in women.
A total of 308 women, aged between 18-72, participated in the study. Approximately 48% had used a dating app in the past two years. T-tests revealed that dating app users had significantly more cosmetic procedures and positive attitudes towards surgery, particularly in social and intrapersonal aspects. Chi-square tests showed dating app users sought more dermal fillers, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty and buttock augmentation than non-users.
The results from the study indicated that women who used dating apps reported having significantly more positive attitudes towards cosmetic surgery, compared to women who were not dating app users. The study also suggested the pressure to alter one’s appearance may arise from dating apps, which require a number of clear selfies for profiles. Additionally, the research stated that dating apps should promote authenticity in self-presentation to help reduce pressure on body image.
