The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has released its national audit, revealing a boom in cosmetic surgery in 2022.
The association’s research showed that cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the UK last year increased by 102% compared to 2021, with 31,057 procedures performed.
Women underwent 93% of all recorded procedures in 2022, constituting a rise of 101% from 2021. The top five surgeries requested by female patients were breast augmentation, breast reduction, abdominoplasty (tummy tucks), liposuction and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).
Meanwhile, the number of male patients seeking cosmetic surgeries rose 118% from 2021. The five most popular procedures among men were rhinoplasty, chest reduction, blepharoplasty, liposuction and otoplasty (ear correction).
BAAPS president Mr Marc Pacifico said, “The 2022 BAAPS audit shows that demand for cosmetic surgery has more than bounced back post pandemic. Economic uncertainty and a decrease in overall consumer spending does not seem to be deterring patients. People are choosing to spend on treatments with a proven track-record of safety and which deliver reliable, long-lasting and natural results.”
BAAPS vice president Ms Nora Nugent further commented, “The increase in procedures like breast reductions indicate that people are being influenced by wellness and improving the quality of their lives. Cosmetic surgery, when performed safely by a qualified plastic surgeon, has a hugely positive psychological impact. Many procedures such as breast reduction or abdominoplasty also carry physical benefits. Looking internationally, this increase in cosmetic procedures is replicated across the world and appears to be sustained even in economic uncertainty.”
Aesthetics will be reporting further on this research.
