A BBC News investigation has highlighted concerns about complications reported by patients following lower-cost upper eyelid blepharoplasty performed abroad.

One patient, Nikita Morgan, travelled from Dublin to Düsseldorf (Faceland) in November 2025 for an upper blepharoplasty after seeing the procedure advertised on TikTok for £650 – a contrast to the £3,400 cost of undergoing the same surgery in Ireland. She told the BBC that she experienced severe pain during surgery and subsequent bleeding, swelling and visual difficulty. Morgan returned home by air on the day of her procedure, which she later said she regretted.

Dusselforf provider, Faceland said it offers “safe and quality” treatment, with consultations and signed consent undertaken before procedures. It stated that fewer than 1% of procedures had resulted in a complaint.

Aesthetics reached out to ophthalmic and oculoplastic surgeon Dr Jonathan Roos, commented, “To ensure an optimal outcome an ophthalmology specialist who can assess for dry eye, blepharitis, eyelid inflammation and other eye problems is essential. The eyelids are not just a piece of skin; they protect vision and the eye surface. In addition to a careful preoperative assessment, including a full history of risk factors, FaceRestoration also offers a direct post-operative communication channel so that every patient can access their operating surgeon 24/7 with any questions.”
