JCCP releases new guidance on PRP regulation

The Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) has published new guidance for platelet-rich plasma (PRP) procedures within medical aesthetic settings.

This guidance was developed by a panel of health protection specialists and healthcare professionals at the request of the JCCP, in collaboration with relevant regulators. It responds to growing concerns regarding the safety and regulation of PRP procedures and aims to support consistent assessment and enforcement practices in the interests of public protection. The document represents the first phase of a wider regulatory review, with further standards expected to be developed by the Cosmetic Practice Standards Authority (CPSA).

The guidance advises local authority officers and practitioners on the safe delivery of PRP treatments, including the use of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)-registered medical devices such as centrifuges and vacutainer tubes specifically designed for autologous PRP procedures. It also confirms that PRP treatments for hair restoration constitute a medical procedure, meaning additional legal and regulatory requirements apply. According to the guidance, all blood collection processes must comply with the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005.
