Calls for warning labels as children use anti-ageing skincare

An ITV News investigation has prompted renewed calls for stronger warnings on products not suitable for young skin.

The report found children as young as four featuring products designed to target wrinkles and other signs of ageing in social media skincare routines. Dermatologists have raised concerns that ingredients formulated for adult skin may cause irritation, allergic reactions and disruption to the skin barrier when used by children, according to ITV News.

One 13-year-old, Sienna, told ITV News she suffered a severe reaction after using skincare products intended for adults. She said the products left her with a swollen, peeling rash that took months to heal.

The British Association of Dermatologists has called for clearer labelling on products containing ingredients unsuitable for children. It wants packaging to carry more explicit warnings, including information about the risks of irritation, allergy and possible longer-term skin damage.

The Advertising Standards Authority commented, “At this point, we haven’t seen evidence of inappropriate advertising of skincare products to children, but it’s an area we’re continuing to explore. In terms of our rules, advertisers have a responsibility to ensure that their ads are socially responsible. Ads mustn’t exploit children’s inexperience or vulnerability or include anything that could cause them physical, mental or moral harm. Ultimately, the protection of children sits at the heart of our work and if we do see evidence of potentially harmful ads then we won’t hesitate to take action.”
