Study recommends AI training for all healthcare staff

New research published by the NHS AI Lab and Health Education England (HEE) has called for all health and care staff to receive training in artificial intelligence (AI).

AI is projected to take on a more prominent role in healthcare in areas such as managing disease as technology advances, and the HEE report has recommended that education and training providers should prioritise AI-based education to prepare healthcare professionals, with advanced learning for specialists.

The report suggests that foundational AI content be created to ensure base-level understanding for all medics, as well as flexible post-graduate learning opportunities and product-specific training.

Brhmie Balaram, head of AI research and ethics at the NHS AI Lab, said, “For the NHS to wholly embrace new AI technologies so they are adopted equitably across the country, it is vital that we ensure all our staff receive appropriate training in AI. This important new research will support those organisations that train our health and care workers to develop their curriculums to ensure staff of the future receive the training in AI they will need.”
