I am subscribed to lots of different skincare blogs and newsletters. Recently, one popped into my inbox that caught my eye. A self-proclaimed ‘skincare expert’ with no discernible training or credentials in dermatology to hold this title wrote a blog post about perioral dermatitis.
I have criticised this ‘expert’ in the past for giving incorrect information and, once again, the details about perioral dermatitis was inaccurate. For example, they wrote that it ‘occurs exclusively around your mouth and/ or nose’ which is incorrect. Perioral dermatitis can also be referred to as periocular dermatitis as the same pathology can occur around the eyes, therefore the accurate diagnostic term is ‘periorificial dermatitis’.1
