APPG launches report on UV safety in Parliament

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Beauty, Hair & Wellbeing (APPG) has published its report on UV safety strategies in Parliament, following a year-long inquiry conducted across the UK.

Titled A Preventable Crisis: The Case for a National UV Safety Strategy, the report identified several key barriers to improving UV safety nationwide, including online misinformation, limited public education surrounding the risks of UV over-exposure and a lack of awareness around the importance of sun protection.

The report follows the launch of the APPG’s UV Safety Inquiry in May 2025, supported by the British Beauty Council in its role as Secretariat. Chaired by Carolyn Harris MP, the cross-party inquiry explored the root causes of UV damage in the UK.

Presented in Parliament, the report outlined six key recommendations, including improving public awareness campaigns and introducing mandatory UV safety education in both primary and secondary schools. It also proposed removing VAT from high-factor children’s sunscreen products and classifying SPF30+ sunscreen as a preventative healthcare item.

Additional recommendations included greater protections for outdoor workers by recognising sun protection as essential PPE, stronger regulation surrounding sunbeds, and tougher action against misinformation online and within advertising.
